Combining two parts

Hello all,
I want to make two parts that fit together with overlapping holes. I have had a little bit of difficulty getting things to line up.

Is this what “layers” is used for?

Say i want to place my second separately machined part into my first machined part and have the bolt holes line up.

Should i design both in one project? Sorry if this isn’t clear i can maybe post a picture.

Layers may be used to organize any design in whatever fashion one might want.

Placing the geometry for each part on a separate layer is a valid approach, but runs into limits when for example two parts need to be cut out of stock of a different thickness.

An alternative would be to have two separate files and to export the geometry as an SVG from one and import it into the other.

Thank you, i will try that.
May not be able to report back for a while, we will be getting on a cruise ship in a couple of days. I didnt want to forget my question in the mean time.
