Computer wont communicate with motion

I am hoping someone has some advice on this. I have an HP laptop computer that is about 3 or 4 years old and has never really been used for anything other than Vectric and Carbide Create and Carbide motion. No bloatware on it. I have used it flawlessly for a few years on all my projects. Yesterday, when I tried to connect to my Shapeoko pro it gives me a message saying something about the controller not responding or something like that. I installed Carbide motion on my wifes laptop and it works perfectly. My USB ports recognize other devices I plug into them and work well. When I plug in the CNC machine into my laptop, I get the audible sound that it typically makes when it connects. Any brainstorming thoughts?

Ooof, usb being flaky can be a whole host of problems.
Sounds like it’s probably your laptop based on the testing you’ve done so far.
Maybe try these:

  • restart pc
  • Connect to different usb port
  • Reinstall carbide motion
  • Try a different usb cable (seems unlikely considering it works with another pc but :man_shrugging:)

If none of those work, I think you might be in proper windows trouble shooting waters :grimacing:

thank yo. I have done all of the above except trying a new cable. Going to try that today after work.

Hey Jeff,
If the changing of the USB cable doesn’t resolve the issue. Try to “uninstall” all versions of Carbide Motion via windows “Apps and features” and then reinstall it again. This will ensure that all possible corrupted files are replaces.
Good luck.

So I bought a new cable. Cable works fine connecting to wife’s Laptop. Works perfectly on her machine. Still wont connect to mine. I tried to uninstall the last few Windows updates, no luck still. I tried to uninstall the USB ports and then reinstalled them. No luck. I uninstalled Motion and restarted the computer then installed motion again. Still no luck. I tried switching USB ports, no luck… Any computer people out there that can offer any other suggestions would be very appreciative. Thank you…

Are you able to connect other USB devices to your laptop successfully?
What you are describing sounds like maybe dirty USB contacts or half fried USB controller. Have you looked into the USB ports of your laptop to see if they are covered in dust or other debris?

Have you opened up your laptop casing to see if the motherboard is covered in dust or the internal USB connectors/wiring are damaged in any way?

My USB ports do work for my wireless mouse, and I am able to charge my phone with them and if I plug in a USB with files on it, it reads them. I will try to blow any dust out today when I get home. Thanks for the suggestion.

Have you tried disabling Bluetooth?

I will try that too. Good idea.

Sounds like wife needs to be convinced to switch her laptop. Probably you will need a new laptop.
Had the same issue, changed the laptop, (I changed the cable afterwards  ), also was are HP ones, they sell new for cheap at Walmart: does not need any terrific specifications but check for screen resolution CC needs some minimum.

Also, just to be sure and ask the obvious, you are on the very latest version of Carbide Motion or tried updating?

After all the help and suggestions, and a few computer geeks I know. I uninstalled a bunch of stuff that I dont use, Deleted Motion again, deleted Carbide Create, shut laptop down for a couple hours and then re-installed Motion and it works. Not sure for how long, but as of right now it works. Thanks all for the help and suggestions.
