Confused by Carbide Corner Square Geometry

Hi All,

I’m a bit confused by the design of the corner square. I was really excited to get this, I was planning to make my own Ben Myer’s square but for $20, this was a no brainer.

Anyway, I created my wasteboard, with holes spaced 72.5mm apart, with the next row offset by 24.1666mm (1/3). My goal was to allow me to place the square anywhere on the table and I would always have holes within 25mm of the object I need to clamp.

After creating the board, I happily put the square on the top only to realize it didn’t line up. Initially I thought I’d screwed up but then I realized the square has a weird layout. The four holes are spaced 72.5mm apart but the holes at 90-degrees are not 72.5mm away, they are something like 68mm.

You can see in the photo that the straight pieces have holes spaced slightly further apart than the corner holes…

What’s the logic behind this? It seems like a weird decision and I imagine other people might make the same mistake I made…

I think to fix it, I will cut the square into two pieces, then use a square to line them all up. Which is a shame!

Don’t cut it. Like I said in your other post about this, just mill the holes for the square where you think you’ll need it. Your other holes can be wherever you want them. Not Ideal, but a corner square is probably better off being cut by the machine, in place to ensure that it is, in fact, square.
From the files they published:

The files they provide actually are designed for pockets to be milled to place the square in.
Thought was that they could be used on a project by project basis if not giving it a permanent home. Hole spacing thought…no idea.

EDIT: Just so you know…I read your post and was all like “What!? NO! Why would they do that?!” I feel your pain.

Ah yeah, now I fully get your point!

My threaded holes are not square and don’t need to be for them to usable. At the time I said that the square has slope, so I could just square it up as I screw it down.

Milling a set of holes just for the square, would give me a set of holes that are really square to the mill. So I guess I’ll do that.

I really only need two places for the square, so the idea of being able to use it anywhere isn’t really necessary. I’ll just add four holes for “small pieces” about a 1/3 of the way into the wasteboard and four holes right at the edge when I’m using the full size of the machine. I prefer to use the middle because it allows me to “close” the door to my cabinet and enclose the dust.

Thanks for the advice again!
