Cutter / Endmill / Bit Questions

I have some questions on some cutters … thanks.

  1. Carbide 3D sells 2 different 1/32" bits …#121 is a Ball Cutter and #122 is a Flat Cutter. In looking at the photos it sure looks like to me that the pictures are reversed. Does the #122 Flat Cutter really have a ball at the end of it? I have the 1/32" SpeTool downcut Flat Cutter on order and the profile sure looks different from the #122. Has anyone used the #122 Flat Cutters and have an opinion on them? For using with Oramask I would think that downcut bits are the way to go. Is that correct?

  2. I am looking to get the Amana AMS-195-K ‘O’ bits for plexiglass work. Any feedback from the community on these? Are there others that come better recommended from the community?

  3. Does anyone here have any recommendations on a 15 degree V-bit?

Thanks again. George

  1. The pictures are not reversed. They are good bits but note that you will need a 1/8 in collet (sold under accessories). When using Oramask, a downcut bit is always recommended regardless of bit size. I always buy multiples of these tiny bits because they do break but I have used them successfully in brass on a Shapeoko 3. Just don’t be aggressive.
  2. Amana is too expensive for me. The single flute bits from Carbide 3d work fine.
  3. To experiment I have bought 10 packs of cheap 15, 20, and 30 degree v bits. They break and I throw them away.

Wow … so, if that is a 1/32" cutting head, then the shaft below it is about 1/64" … how the heck doesn’t that bit break even going thru paper  ?

Carbide is tough stuff.

Also, one is presenting the cutting edge at speed, and removing one chipload-sized chip at a time.

And if you turned it for another picture,it would look different yet. If you break one in paper, that’s on you.

Bozo … Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Another Senior moment! I see that now!! I need to stop getting up at 4am.

I have been using #122 1/32" for 6 years with no breaking in hardwoods and soft. That little bit is a trooper. Being such a small bit maybe yours ground wrong or maybe it hit something hard.

if bits break don’t they damage the stock? So I try what I can to avoid a tool failure.

Guy … I don’t have that bit, so I never broke it. It just looks SOOOO weak at 1/32". I do have a downcut 1/32" on order … and will probably get the C3D ones in the near future.
