Recommendations on cutting Oracal? I have a design with some very fine lines I want to paint so I thought I would mask and then cut and paint. I have used shelf liner in the past and tried using MC Etcher on it today but it either didn’t go through or bunched it up.
So I am going to try some Oracal.
Should I use MCEtcher, Stingray or a fine point V bit to cut the masking layer? I don’t really want to go deep with this as I will follow up with other cuts after the painting is done.
If you’re just masking to paint, I use the Stingray. You have to press the Oramask on really well. And you should have a smooth, shiny surface to apply the mask. To cut an even depth everywhere the surface also needs to be flat and parallel to the machine motion. You should surface the workpiece, sand it smooth, apply a sealing coat & sand that smooth. Then apply the mask.
You only need to cut about 0.003 - 0.004" deep with the Stingray.
I am actually applying this over PVC and want part of it to remain the natural white color. I picked up a roll of Oracal locally but I don’t think it is the right kind. Will test tomorrow.
