I attempted to integrate my 20W laser with my Shapeoko Pro by connecting the laser’s driver adapter to the PWM port on the Shapeoko Pro’s PCB. Upon applying power to the laser’s driver adapter, I immediately heard a cracking sound and disconnected it. Now, while the power light on the Shapeoko Pro remains illuminated, the machine is otherwise unresponsive.
Could you help me identify what might have gone wrong?
How can I successfully complete this integration?
Is it possible that my PCB is damaged?
From the pictures, a few points of interest.
Too much exposed copper on the wires could have shorted against ground somewhere.
The purple and black wires (at the carbide board) appear to be in the correct pin holes, although, the purple appears grounded against the housing = bad.
I have no idea where you are running that completely bare wire that is in the 5 volt pinhole, but you don’t need that, just the ground and PWM.
Next, you have hooked up to the laser drivers OUTPUT plug. You should be hooking to the INPUT side.
so, being as you have run output to output I would guess you have damaged at least one of the boards, likely the carbide controller board. Maybe both boards.
Also, you have the selector switch on the laser board set to manual/internal, instead of external. Change that to EXT.
and a side note, the laser tree specs. With Laser tree, the wattage rating is total power consumed, that includes fan motors. True optical output on that laser is around 5 watts.
