Drilling Bit Question

Good afternoon y’all!
I have to drill 1/4" holes .5" deep. Should I use an 1/8" or 1/4" downcut?
TIA!

I’ve had good luck drilling 1/4" holes with a 1/4" upcut endmill using peck drilling, no more than 0.125 per peck (in wood). Don’t do this with a downcut, as it will push the chips into the hole with nowhere to escape.

Your other option is “Hole Milling”, which would work better with the 1/8" or 3/16" if you have one.
Use a Contour path. Set the Depth per cut on the tool greater than 0.5", set the Max depth on the toolpath to 0.5", Turn on ramping & use 3-5° ramp angle. It will cut a spiral (helix) down to full depth (the ramp), then make one circular pass at the bottom.
