I’m sure this has been beat to death, but one more time maybe? I finally have a little work that will keep my Shapeoko 3 running for hours at a time. I have a 650cfm single stage dust collector or a Fein Turbo II vacuum I can dedicate to the machine, I’m going to put a dust deputy or similar on whichever I end up using. My Fein is 20 yrs old but still going strong, the small dust collector is almost as old. Any preference for one over the other?
I suppose that depends on what single stage dust collector you have. A lot of folks use the Fein Turbo II with a Deputy and love it. Personally, I have an Oneida Dust Cobra that I use for powered hand tools (it has a 2.5" inlet) that does double-duty for the CNC and it works extremely well. The volume is lower, as is the pitch…and the suck is excellent (it’s an industry term).
Most dust collectors like your Fein are not really designed to run continuously. A regular dust collector even a 650cfm can be run continuously because of their design. The 650cfm likely has a TEFC motor (Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled). This type of motor is continuously cooled by the motor itself and can be continuously run. Vacuum cleaners like your Fein have their motors cooled but are usually not as big of a motor or as big of a fan. Fein is a great vacuum and has lasted a long time but it was never meant to run continuously like a dedicated dust collector. Many use the shop vac type collectors with no problem but by design the shop vac type is inferior to the dedicated dust collection in both cfm and lifetime.
One thing to consider is both of these systems are old is the bag system. Older dust collectors tent to spew more dust into the air depending on the bag design. On the 650cfm one with a cloth bag likely is putting a lot of dust into the air. The Fein may out perform the amount of dust spewed into the air over the 650cfm. They make after market bags for DC systems and you might want to investigate that. The Fein was designed to work while a task was being performed and not a continuous long run.
The Fein. Quieter and uses less electricity
It’s a standard 2 bag, 650cfm, 1hp small shop dust collector. Unbranded. I think finding/making a suitable dust shoe is the key. If I neck it down to fit a smaller opening I lose all the advantage of the 4” hose.
Guy, I’ve upgraded the bags over the years. I think it’s probably the way to go, and just keep using the Fein for other tasks in the shop.
