Make sure you shop specs though. They come in different sizes, resolutions, wired/wireless, etc. and it’s very easy to confuse 5mm lens with 5mp resolution.

This is the one I got, and the one I recommended for you. To be very satisfied with the autofocus, try to have the camera not closer than 1.5" from the target “your bit”. I’m back home, but I still don’t have the strength to replace my board and get everything up & running again.

This is not the same camera. This one is available on Amazon for $15. It is 1mp, and it’s for checking your ears, and it comes with some cleaning items to clean your ears.

I wasn’t recommending any single camera. The eBay link I posted goes to a general search for endoscope cameras - or it does for me, at least. Regardless, that’s why I specifically said “Make sure you shop specs though. They come in different sizes, resolutions, wired/wireless, etc. and it’s very easy to confuse 5mm lens with 5mp resolution.”

New day, new camera came in, new tests.
Spinning Amana single flute at 1000RPM, 1920x1080 50fps


Lower res, 100fps, slowed down to 50fps

Low res, 330fps, slowed down to 40fps

And full res still capture of that beautiful beautiful cutter

Did you change the camera again? Or is it the 5mp Teslong endoscope?

It’s a new (and hopefully last) one:

The 5mp endoscope tests were a disaster due to the autofocus (which I knew would happen, but still could not resist trying anyway), and I did not have time yet to investigate whether there is any way to disable autofocus (I doubt it, it’s usually a built-in hardware/firmware feature)

That last camera one looks promising for close up shots, but has a very narrow depth of field with that 6mm lens, it needs to be within 2" of the endmill. But the 330fps mode should be fun.

So right now I’m knee-deep in 3 or 4 concurrent versions of dust shoe designs in Fusion to print several parts, one for each camera, that I will be able to use depending on the situation. This has definitely become yet another rabbit hole, but I get to practice Fusion in the process, which is nice.

I completed the dust shoe to mount that latest camera, I moved it to the back half of the dust shoe this time, opposite of the vacuum opening, and exactly 50mm from the endmill (which is the middle of the narrow focus range). This should minimize the amount of chips in front of the camera.
I had to move it really, really low so that it clears the bottom of the X rail/HDZ when using thick stock, so it hovers 3mm above the stock surface (which is still plenty enough on that Z-independent dust shoe)

Time will tell if the chips end up wearing the lens, but for now I wanted to stop worrying and start cutting.

I repeated a test cut in acrylic, 1920x1080x50fps:

Same cut captured at 640x360x330fps slowed down to 40fps:

The interesting thing (to me) in the slowmo version is that a stuttering while cutting the sharp curve turn is visible. I’ll need to investigate whether that’s the (new) PC struggling to feed GRBL with the tens of very small G-code moves in the area, or GRBL struggling to chain those tiny linear movements and I never noticed it before because it’s not obvious in the normal fps recording.

Nice,

You could insert a thin mylar or acrylic layer as a disposable lens cover so you can wear that out instead of the camera. Assuming you can’t find a UV filter that size :wink:

Focus seems fine however depth of field is very shallow:

Each one of those cameras I tried has one thing it does well, and then one or two major drawbacks.
Basically I need that very first borescope’s field of view and form factor, but at full HDx50fps and the ability to do 330fps. Also called “a Unicorn”, in that price range.

In photography, DOF is deeper with a smaller iris (needing more light for the same exposure.)

Yep, but this lens has a constant aperture. But you know what helps too? Adjusting the MANUAL FOCUS RING that’s been there all along:

Aaaand I go back to Fusion to move the lens further away from the center point, and try and angle it better. It does look like I’m learning to ride a bike, indeed.

What would be really useful to me, once you have this nailed down, is slow motion videos of INCORRECT feed/speed settings and improper bit selection. Would be a great teaching tool. “See here, how the bit is just spinning and not cutting…”

Agreed. While the very limited 640x360 resolution at 330fps will not make it an ideal educational tool, it should allow me to capture a few bad runs (be they intentional or not) and share them.

Thermal imaging, I did not consider that no, it would be fun to visualize how (and where) the tool warms up. Good point but probably waaaay out of my budget range.
