Attempted engraving aluminum for the first time on my Shapoko. I used a 60 degree V-bit at 30K rpms and a travel speed of 5 ipm. It came ok for what it is, but it doesn’t seem like it cut it seems like it just shoved it around.
Anyone have any experience they could share? I’m going to attempt cutting some shapes out of 5052 for water tanks using an O-flute .125” end mill. Any advice would be appreciated!! TIA!
Rather than a V tool, perhaps a #501 or #502? The rounded tip will hold up better, but feeds and speeds are still going to be difficult — is coolant an option?
Yeah I’d expect troubles with 5052. Should be doable but probably not super fun or satisfying to cut.
I imagine it’s a requirement for the bends in the tank? If it doesn’t need to be formed (maybe it’s just a badge you’re cutting ) then I’m with Will in that another material will serve you better.
The tread plate pictured was a scrap piece to see if I can engrave the tuna. I am replacing the running boards on my boat trailer with the aluminum diamond plate. Each running board will have a different fish engraved on it. Dolphin, tuna, wahoo, marlin.
