I’m looking to try and “engrave” stainless steel with my Shapeoko Pro XL. A couple of questions:
- Is it possible?
- If so, what bit to use?
- What feeds and speeds?
- In addition to engraving I want to cut them out. What bit if different from #2 above?
- What’s the best method for holding it in place while carving/cutting? It is very thin.

How deeply do you need to mark?
The M.C. Etcher works well for this:
As noted above, I made a custom fixture to hold the part.

Cutting out wasn’t relevant to what I did.
You’d need a suitable carbide tool for cutting steel — there have been a couple of posts on it:
