Etching Photographs?

I wanted to start etching photographs into acrylic. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this and which program you use to clean up the photos or get them to where carbide create will accept them and actually create a good engrave toolpath to get these to look good.

From what I’ve read you have to first convert the image to greyscale and then go from there. It seems that contrast is the key here.
