My first attempt at an inlay maple and walnut the walnut did chip out but the was using a 1/4 end mill

Looks pretty good for a first attempt at inlays. Those small chipouts can be easily filled with a sawdust/glue mix then sanded clean. No one will ever see those spots ![]()

if the image has sharp edges use end grain wood. With long grain wood avoid sharp edges / corners, they almost always break out/off.
