For Absolutely No Good Reason, I Modeled My Dust Shoe

I replied to someone looking for another dust shoe alternative, but they had already tried the Suck-It. But that got me thinking about how much I like it and how it is a shame that they only make it for their own machines now.

Well, I spent a few hours of time that I could have been watching T.V. and modeled the whole thing - except for their original 2.5" dust shoe. I used their dust shoe to design and 3D print a 4" version for more air flow, and it has been working great since 2019 (according to the solid model files and the Thingiverse upload date).

I am going to make some changes to the parts because I plan on using a modified version of this for my SO5.1Pro when I get it shortly. One of the biggest things is the acrylic is just so flexible.

  • The vertical arms are going to be upgraded to 3/8" 6061 instead of 1/2" acrylic.

  • The hourglass looking spacers are 3D printed, and they also have a lot of flex, so I am going to use two unthreaded aluminum spacers (30mm and 35mm long) on each side to make up the depth needed, and use a 3D printed holder much like the existing part, but the two aluminum spacers will be epoxied in place, and should handle the forces better than just the (most likely) 100% PLA printed parts they are now.

  • Might also make the other acrylic arm out of aluminum, but more likely will make it out of FBM - cotton fiber reinforced phenolic (MIL-I-24768/16).
