Grid pattern tool paths

Hi,
My name is Evan and I am new to carbide and CNC in general. I am looking to make a grid pattern with a v-bit and am able to draw it up how I want it done but am struggling with setting the tool paths. I am able to make the tool path for the outside of the box but can’t seem to get them going for all the lines within the box. I am looking to make a meat tenderizer type of pattern. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Welcome Evan to the Carbide family.
Here is the file for my grid on my Shapeoko Pro XXL.
SPXXL 2 in grid for waste board 90V Bit Vcarve 2.c2d (124.8 KB)
Please note: If you zoom in to the grid you will see the lines are very thin rectangles. This is done to do an advanced Vcarve process to get the Grid effect.
Feel free to ask if you have further questions.

The best way to do this would be a series of rounded rectangles, which are as wide as is necessary to cut as deeply as desired, but which don’t overlap:

Or you can do it this way.
Even though you didn’t tell me about this when I asked… WILL!

Will is the one who showed the way I have it in the file.

Thank you everybody for the info! None of this makes sense yet, but I will work through it

So I got this far, but am stuck on how to smooth out the border? I’d like it to have a v-groove all the way around but every time I try to do that, the tool path shows doing a big “X” right in the middle. Any way to have it not do that?

I think you need to draw two rectangles, that will be the inner and outer edges of your border. Select both, and do a VCarve path on that, so that it VCarves the area between the two rectangles.

Unfortunately, a pair of nested rectangles won’t work — they will overcut at the corners — it might work w/ an Advanced V carving, but it’s just easier to use more rectangles:

I made a grid for mine setting the stock size to the size of my wastboard and grid spacing to 1 inch in CC. then used polyline tool to just follow the grid. Is there a benefit to the way you have done it here? also I am guessing this is not a grid for the spoil board since it looks like you are cutting fairly deep, just curious.

Using the separate rectangles and V carving toolpaths allows for an accurate 3D preview.

Geoff,
I am making the pattern for a project, not the wasteboard. I ended up using just a bunch of rectangles like everybody said and it worked out nice. My machine should be arriving tomorrow so once I get it set up, I’ll let you know how it goes.

Evan
