Sorry if this is off topic but generally my best answers come from this community.
I have used hard wax oil for some projects lately and it has been amazing. I have made some new 8’ live edge stairs and would love to use it on them. Its going to be a set of outdoor stairs however. What do i need to do to protect this after the wax is on? Or is there an exterior wax that will give the same effect and be weather resistant? In my mind, i can use this wax then take a clear coat varathane for weather protection - or am i just dreaming?
I looked up t his product. Right on the website they state:
For use on furniture, flooring, and other interior surfaces
So they are not recommending this for outdoor surfaces. My experience with hardwax is once it is applied other things dont want to stick to it. Maybe call the company to see what they recommend for outdoor.
I have built sail boat doors and other outdoor projects and pretty much anything you put on outdoor wood needs to be maintained and likely replaced every 2-4 years. So you could be creating a maintenance nightmare. As long as you are willing to constntly maintain your outdoor surface and renew it when needed then it might work but talk to the OEM to see what they suggest.
I think they are a Canadian company so if you are in Canada they likely have a different contact forthe Canadians.
I would highly suggest using Helmsman Exterior Spar Urethane instead. It would hold up a lot better. I don’t think it would work over the Hardwax though.
As Guy says, exterior treatments need to be refreshed, the main difference between them being how often they need refreshing. The interior hardwax also need refreshing, especially on floors, worktops etc.
There are hardwax oils which are intended for exterior use, one key difference is that they have UV protective elements. I’ve used the Osmo and it’s pretty good, however in the slighly salty rain we get here no treatment lasts very long.
A poly for yachts (as per Derek) on Sapele has been the toughest so far.
