Has anyone used a CNC Shapeoko 5 Pro to build a full size heirloom baby bassinet. Are there any pattern loads available?
I am reminded of an old story about the landowner, who when going to cut down an old crab apple tree is confronted by a small being who claims to live in the tree and objects when told that the wood will simply be burned — when the landowner notes that his daughter is expecting and that a cradle is needed, the being demurs and accepts that as a suitable usage for the wood. The landowner, despite being an indifferent woodworker at best who has found apple to be a difficult wood to work with, find that the grain falls out with this so as to make the cradle go together quite easily and well, and that the child always fell asleep promptly when placed in the cradle and rocked. A picture was included with the story, ostensibly that of the tree spirit.
A similar cradle was made by a wonderfully talented cabinetmaker whose shop I used to frequent after school for his first grandchild, then a toddler — when she was told that her grandfather had made it by hand, she expressed an interest to see his shop, which she had never before done — arrangements were made, and when the door to the carriage house which he used as a shop was open, revealing a seemingly endless expanse of woodworking tools, she stamped her foot and loudly complained to her mother, “You lied! Grandpa doesn’t make things with his hands! He uses tools!”
What do you envision as the overall dimensions?
What material do you wish to use? Budget?
What sort of joinery would you wish to implement?
Overall style of the piece? Colonial, Shaker, Southern Folk?
This eBay listing has a number of photos:
several of which include a tape measure, so dimensions and proportions could be easily arrived at:
If that suits, it would be pretty easy to draw up — let us know if you have difficulty doing so — probably the easiest thing to do would be to make a couple of guides for a drill to drill pilot holes and countersinks for screws at the requisite angle and position.
Standard size 18x30
18x30 Rectangle Mattress dictates size I suspect
Maple
Joinery is undetermined, like to try to use as little hardware as possible, but it makes sense that the uprights should be able to separated from the cradle so I am open to suggestions
