I was working on a wavy American Flag but cannot seem to get it right. Attached is the file. Originally I was going to resaw the 2x4 into .75" pieces and have decided after carving the flat flag on one side I will flip over the 1.5" stock and do the wavy flag. I followed a youtube video about making the wavy flag and it just does not look right. Any suggestions to improve the wavy flag would be appreciated. The file has .75" material but the new material is 1.5".
Made progress on flat flag. Painted recessed parts and sanded off excess. I put dewaxed shellac on whole side then painted. After I figure out wavy side I will paint rest of flag. Will look at painted parts out in sunlight tomorrow to see if I need a second coat of white and red. Will let the paint cure overnight.
A couple things that stand out to me: The waves are not very smooth. Just a matter of making or finding a better wave file (STL or image) to start with.
The stars look a little rough in the simulation. Perhaps 3D finish just the stars with a 1/16 or 1/32 TBM with a much smaller stepover?
I have a deadline and for now I have given up on the wavy flag. I found a nice project on cutrocket.com and modified it for the reverse of my 2x4 flag. I will get back to that at some point. As a side note I upgraded to CC 547 beta and it immediately expired my Pro license. I thought it was the perpetual but seemed to be an annual one. I bought the pro for another year and installed the new license.
I got a base coat on the receded areas. I wish I had deleted the stars that were in the border. That makes painting the project harder. I have a small long round brush but my painting skills are not that good. After the paint dries I will sand off the excess and paint the white areas again. With no primer the pine wood grain is prominent. After I get the white done I will paint the union blue and the red stripes.
