Help with Vcarve set up

Vcarve Screenshot

Can someone help me set up the Vcarve for the attached images. I have only engraved the shelves I make one time and it didn’t look right. What V bit should I use? 60 or 90? I will be carving these into pine. What should my feed rate be, and how deep should I go?

V endmill angle should be related to the size of the features being cut and the thickness of the stock:

  • smaller features == more acute angle
  • thinner stock == less acute angle if the more acute angle is cutting too deeply

A 60 degree V endmill should work well for this — if you have troubles with it, post the file here or to projects@carbide3d.com

Ok thank you so much! The stock is 1.25”. My shelves vary in length but the width is 7” so the carvings will be pretty small. The 60 degree sounds good. What should I set the depth of the cut at?

For a normal V-carve, depth of cut should always equal the thickness of the stock unless there’s a reason to change it.

Note that the V endmill will need to be equal to or greater in diameter than the largest feature you wish to cut with it for a normal V carve — if that’s not the case, use Advanced V carving.
