Unless I’ve missed it, it would be nice to hide the grid sometimes.
I use 3D Max and Maya and all you need do to hide the grid is hit the “g” key. Blender has a similar function to hide its grid.
Very handy when you’re doing complex models and you don’t need snaps, which I rarely use anyway.

Use the checkbox for “Show Grid”?
Note that you can turn snapping on/off:

Note that turning off the display of the grid does not turn off “Snap to grid”, that is under the View menu
