Hip Roof. CC Pro Modeling Challenge

Someone asked on FB how to model this part. I can think of no real way to do it with different angles.

I was able to model it with the 21.8° angles, save it, edit it in Gimp, then bring it back in.

This is not exactly 45°, but the user didn’t specifically ask for an exact angle, just that the roof peak was longer, which would require 2 different angles.

The last time something like this came up, my solution was two separate files/models — my understanding is CC Pro is a modeler for decorative use, not a replacement for a full-fledged 3D CAD program — I believe it’s an accepted limitation that not all geometry can be accurately modeled/cut.

Agreed. And even though I inadvertently dimensioned it with 3 decimal places, the tolerance is indeed “decorative”.

One big brain cramp I’m getting with this 3D stuff is… if I create a shape that extends outside of the workpiece, the shape gets limited to the workpiece. So in this case, if I drew a rectangle on the left that extended 3" outside the workpiece, and 3" inside the workpiece, and made it at least 6" taller than the workpiece, then subtracted an angled shape, I would think it would build the angled shape using my whole rectangle, and just subtract one side of the angled shape. Yet it forces the angled shape to be entirely inside the workpiece limiting it to 3" wide no matter how big I make the rectangle outside of the workpiece.

The green solid is my finished part, and it’s base is the size of the workpiece.
The grey solid is what I would expect if I drew it’s base with 1 edge 3" inside my part, and the other 3 sides 3" outside of the part.

Any geometry which one wishes to model needs to be w/in the stock area.

OK, I think I got this.

Start with a workpiece that is 28 x 15 x 3, and draw in your 19 x 15 rectangle

image

Now add 28 x 15 rectangle, and two 5 x 16 rectangles that overlap the workpiece, and touch the 19 x 5 rectangle on each end

image

Now select the center 19 x 15 rectangle. (Select them all, then unselect the other 3).
And create the following shape

Now select the larger 28 x 15 rectangle, and create the following shape

Take a look. now we just need to chop the ends off.

image

Select both of the end rectangles, and create the following shape

Viola!!!
