I’m having a similar issue, when trying to move the spindle/router by hand on the z axis it moves freely.
How do i fix this and what would be causing this.
One way to check on the machine’s basic function is to move it to the center of each axis with the power off, then install a probing pin, then power up, grab the tip of the pin and try to shift it in all directions — it should stay steady, if it doesn’t investigate what allows it to move and address it.
For the Z-axis check
- Z-Plus/HDZ — the lead nut/ball-nut, linear rails
- HDZ — coupler
- belt-drive — belt tension, pulley set screw
- all — motor wiring and connectors
check in at support if there’s anything which you can’t address.

Definitely check all the items @WillAdams mentioned above. A video of whats going on would be helpful too.
