Homing / Y-Switch

This is a partially repeated message, and I’ve already reached out to support (again), but thought I’d throw it out to the community…

When initializing my SP Pro (XL), it basically ignores the Y limit switch and just keeps pushing into it (loud rattling sound). I was sent a new limit switch, but still the same issue. The red sensor light goes on, but debug in CM does not recognize it, and there is no blue LED light when the switch is triggered. Interestingly, I hooked up an older control board (which had another issue with the VFD connector) to try to test it. Here, debug did recognize and the blue LED lit up. However, still the same issue when initializing.

Any thoughts?

I would next check the connection at the board. I myself may have made an error by missing the pin when installing.

Disconnect from the board. Disconnect power. Push-pull the pins to see if there is any movement at the board that could indicate a bad solder joint. Check the plug to see if the sockets look even. Push-pull the wire at the plug. Check connections all the way back to the end.

If you have a multimeter, with the wire disconnected at both ends, do a continuity test on each wire.

Let us know what you find.

Remember to turn the power back on when you get everything reconnected. I may have made that mistake before.

Sounds to me like it is connected to a limit switch port, just not the correct limit switch port or the placement of the limit switch is off. Carbide 3d has amazing customer support though so I am sure they will work through this with you. Sadly I am still rocking a Shapeoko 3 xxl so thats as far as I can help.

Electronic possibilities are:

  • bad/intermittent switch
  • bad/intermittent connection
  • failing controller
  • wrong connection
  • a failing Y-axis motor

Mechanical considerations are:

  • belt tension
  • pulley set screw adjustment
  • lubrication/condition of the linear blocks/rails
  • mechanical interference
  • worn belt(s)

Troubleshooting is usually:

  • power up, connect to machine, go to Settings | Debug and test each switch — does each signal as the correct switch?
  • Leave machine powered up for twenty minutes or so, then check the temperature of each connection — being warmer than room temperature would indicate the resistance of a poor connection — and test each switch again
  • jog the machine through the full range of motion for each axis and test at each end (usually one starts in the middle, if not, there as well)

To test the Y-axis motors:

  • power down, remove both Y-axis belts, put a bit of tape on the pulleys (so as to more easily see their rotation)
  • power up, connect to the machine and initialize — the machine should home Z- and X-axes as normal, while the Y-axis motors should turn until they time out, do they turn evenly and in synch? If not, a Y-axis stepper driver chip has probably failed, or there’s a problem in the wiring.

After testing, power down and reinstall the belts swapping side-for-side and flipping end-for-end if in good condition, otherwise replace.

It’s hard to test without known good components, but if everything checks out mechanically, consider replacing:

  • Y-axis switch
  • Y-axis wiring extensions
  • controller

I had a wire disconnect from a pin in a connector for a limit switch, and it was intermittent. I have had that same issue several times over the years with connectors. I would check end to end continuity for each wire.
