I’ve got a project I’ve been trying to cut for month on a completely unsuitable machine and hope the Pro 5.1 will be the answer to a maiden’s prayer.
My product is an “organic” table leg that is shaped like a tree trunk. Sort of a sweeping shape that curves up, has a split then two branches that Y off. So it’s cylindrical and I’ll have to cut one side, flip it then cut the other. A 4th rotational axis wouldn’t work as the ends of the Y are too far apart to fit under the gantry.
My question is on the Z height of the machine. Specs say Z travel is 6.1" BUT…I don’t know where the spindle mounts on the Z, and if the machine can actually start it’s cut that far from the spoil board.
If I’m using a bit with a 2" depth of cut, and my stock is 3 3/4" thick, am I going to be able to get my zero on top of the stock with some slop above for travel?
Note that w/ a 5.1 you have the option of mounting the stock at the front of the machine in the “Overhang cutting area” and then use “Gantry Shift” so as to be able to cut it:
Yep…I don’t think hanging over the end will work just because of the breadth of the piece. But I didn’t think about a longer bit. And I figured I’d be “visiting” with a hand held backup vac quite a bit. But I wanted to make sure I had a good grasp of the time/space aspects before I plunk down that much $$
The spindle height is adjustable to accommodate taller or shorter jobs. The spindle nut will go above the bottom of the X/Z slide. So, with the right tooling you can cut a 6" tall part.
On a box stock original SP5 the distance from the bottom of the XZ mount to the table top is 4.3"
With the 1" risers from Pwncnc that becomes 5.3 " , I have not tried the mounts shown above.
The spindle can be raised above the bottom of the XZ mount.
