How large of a piece can the Carbide 3D Nomad 3 machine?

Looking to machine aluminum blocks that are 70x70x70mm. My worry is that I won’t be able to drill holes (4mm deep) at the top of the material after accounting for the shank length. Any information would be helpful.

Note: drilling blind holes 4mm deep and 1mm in diameter.

70mm is less than the 3" Z-axis working area — this should be fine, so long as the alu. alloy you use is suited to machining using the tool and feeds and speeds you use.

I’ll take a picture when I get home and make sure that you won’t have an issue. I think the main thing is the z axis doesn’t entirely have clearance with the wasteboard

I’m planning on using a jig that holds the metal from the sides. I don’t plan on going anywhere near the baseplate either. So I don’t think I’ll need the wasteboard but it’ll still be nice to have. Please let me know. Thanks!!!

Yeah, it’ll fit. This is a 1-2-3 block on end

Youll need to figure out tool stickout and retract settings, but it’s certainly not an impossible task.

As Josh said, be cognizant of the retract. I can’t count how many times the default retract setting in fusion 360 has tripped the z limit

(Thank goodness there’s a limit at all. Otherwise I’d have that little machine ripping itself apart!)
