How to enter a manufacturers tool database!

Today I had a problem. Another forum user helped me get my CC pro back up and running and it reminded me I’ve never seen anyone entering tools into the database this way so I thought I would tell people how to do it.
Using IDC woodcraft as an example (many others do it also), manufacturers have spreadsheets of all their tools with all the info. That comes in handy especially when I find it difficult to enter odd tool bit sizes the normal way in CC.
IDC woodcraft, last I checked, does not have one for CC. But don’t worry. A spreadsheet is a spreadsheet is a spreadsheet all day long. Download the one you prefer to your computer from the website. Open it using whatever program you have. I have Libreoffice and Numbers. Numbers seem to open so I use that.
When I use Numbers I specifically have to export the file to a csv file but first I rename the file using this convention…
Name+Name+Name (notice how CC uses 3 different names in their tool list)
“+” symbol is used as an escape character. It will display “-” when CC is closed and re-opened.

After its converted to a .csv file save it somewhere permanent. Once that is done right click the entire csv file and copy the file or select file icon and hit “cmd c” to copy.
Open CC > Carbide create > about carbide create > Open data directory > tools.
Now just hit “cmd v” or just right click and click paste to paste the csv file.
Now close out CC and reopen and Wallah you have an entirely new database with all the tools from your favorite manufacturer with out all the hard work.

You can add tools through CC. However editing the .csv file in a spreadsheet program and saving as a .csv you can edit any field you want. However CC only reads certain fields and every tool has to have a unique tool number. If you duplicate tool numbers cc gets confused.

If IDC has F&S you dont like and dont want to manually modify them everytime you choose a tool you can permanently change the F&S as above. If you have a builtin tool you can copy it and change it as well.

Quite some time ago I wrote up what fields were used in custom tools. That was back in CC 3 or 4 so things may have changed. I dont think C3D has any documentation on what fields they actually read in a custom tool base. I would suppose only the ones they let you add.

What is F&S? I don’t know what that means.

F&S most likely = Feeds and speeds
