Importing from Shapr3D to Carbide Create Pro

I have numerous designs with complex curves that were created n Shapr3D. The design has many 3D bodies. I’m not however cutting a 3D design - these will be cut as if I’m looking from top down or side, depending on the part.

I can export each body from Shapr3d as an STL, but when I import to Carbide Create, the dimensions don’t get imported. Whatever height and width I have in the blank design is the width it converts the imports to. The design shading also looks dark and I’m not sure that’s correct either. I’ve attached an example.

I have many parts, so I can’t be resizing in Carbide Create or else I risk parts not matching up correctly. It’s also extremely time consuming to do that.

I have to design in Shapr3D because these are collaborations and many of the designers do not use Carbide Create. Any suggestions from the community?

When you import an STL into Carbide Create it is possible to set the size in Carbide Create to match the STL file.

According to:

it is possible to export as a DXF — have you tried that?

I did try DXF, but Carbide Create just said error, without additional information.

When you say “it is possible to set the size in Carbide Create” can you elaborate on what that means or how to do that with an STL?

Please send any DXFs which will not properly load into Carbide Create to support@carbide3d.com and we will look into them with you.

An STL is usually defined so that the internal units are millimeters:

If one then sets up a job to dimensions which are slightly greater than that for X and Y and equal for Z (accounting for rotation):

draws in geometry to define where the 3D model will be centered:

then imports the STL, adjusting rotation as need be:

It is then possible to adjust the scaling for XY:

click “Apply”

and separately adjust Z:

“Apply”

“Show 3D”

to see the rotated rectangle.
