Importing .NC files

I hope this is a simple question Im new. If I import .nc files into maker, do I set my stock size ect do I set all parameters in create first?
Thanks!

Yes. The gcode tells the router where to move and the stock thickness and if you are using the top or bottom of material. When the gcode is produced all those parameters are baked into the gcode. So no matter what gcode sender you use the router will do what the gcode says.

So when you do the setup in CC the gcode is calculated with the parameters used in setup to generate the gcode. Be sure to use the Shapeoko/Nomad post processor if you have a C3D machine. If you have a 3rd party machine use the generic/gbrl post processor. The C3D machines post processor utilizes the special features that the Shapeoko/Nomad have like the BitSetter. Additionally the Carbide Motion is not just a gcode sender. CM controls the jogging parameters that are used in the configuration. If you have a 3rd party machine the generic/gbrl post processor does not make the gcode commands needed for C3D machines. Some gcode senders have macros that you make to use the special functions of 3rd party machines.

What type of CNC do you have?

sorry for the delay!! I really appreciate your time! I have a Shapeoko 4 XXL. So my main concern is when I import Gcode from an online project purchase. Where does the setup info come from. the stock size etc??? Thanks again!!!

Running G-code would require that the setup and stock size exactly match how they were defined in the original file — this would need to be provided by the folks who provide the file — that said we recommend against this.

What sort of files are you considering purchasing?

Have you checked out Cutrocket?

If an online seller is only providing GCode, you really don’t want that product. The seller has made a bunch of decisions that very much should be made by you, including:

  • the exact size of the project
  • the tools that will be used
  • the feeds and speeds (F&S).

What if you want to use a different material, say MDF vs hardwood vs softwood - you should at least have different F&S depending on the material.

Maybe you want a slightly different size to match a piece of stock you already have - can’t do that easily with just the GCode.

Etc Etc Etc.

You can make it work if you are very careful, but if the seller isn’t providing the detail that already answers the questions you have, it’s no longer a beginner project.

You cannot import gcode into CC. As others explained above just gcode does not the info to cut a project. You can see gcode in a text reader and try to reverse engineer it but you would be wasting your time.

What is the project you want to create?

Cutrocket.com has a lot of ready to download and cut projects. If running CC v7 many of the projects are from earlier versions. They still work. Just open them and save with v7 .c2d file. Then open and modify what ever you want.
