I am almost finished with assembling my Shapeoko 5 Pro CNC with 65mm VFD spindle. However, the spindle will not slide into the circular mount because the circumference of the mount is too tight. I removed the two screws which tighten the mount, but still cannot insert the spindle. I don’t want to force fit the spindle and damage anything.
What do you suggest I try to get the spindle to fit into the mount?
Is possible to use a wedge to open the bracket a bit without the spindle being present? upon success, the spindle may slip snugly into the bracket. Secondly, if the bracket is dismounted form the shapeoko, warming the bracket up to 150 degrees but less than 210 would expand the bracket to allow a cool spindle to fit snugly. I question once you get the spindle in the bracket, can you then move it for “z” level positioning?
Running into the exact same problem - brand new machine and I’m at the point of installing the 65mm VFD, can’t get it to slide farther in than the bottom of the clamp. Don’t want to damage either piece, but might try the gently-wedge-the-clamp trick and report back.
I received the following advice from Carbide Support:
“I had this on one of my installs. I took a wide flat blade screw drive and wrapped the blade with a paper towel and was able to get it in the top, centered back to front of the slot opening and pry just enough to have the VFD able to slide in my opposite hand. Give this a try. If you are unable to get it let us know and we can look at other options.”
I only had to pry it slightly and it worked. Keep a grip on the spindle with one hand while you gently pry the mount with the other hand.
