I’ve been testing to see how fast I can go with a finish pass on a 3d carve.
I’m curious if anyone knows if it’s hard on the z-axis moving at fast rate. It seems like it handles it like a champ. This is also in pine for now. I know I probably can’t go this fast in hard maple
I am also new to CNC so this might even be a totally normal/preferred speed.
CC default for 1/16 ballnose
1143mm/m (45in/m)
My test for 1/16 ballnose. Over 2x the speed that CC starts off with.
3000mm/m (120in/m)
What speeds are you all using?

Also the quality of the carve seems the same as going the default speed from CC.
3D finish can be run quite fast…as fast as you’re comfortable allowing the machine to go - as long as the step-over is very small which it usually is for 3D finish.
As the step-over is usually very small, it takes a lot of passes, removing a small sliver of material with each pass, so the only signifcant forces on the machine are that created by the machine moving itself around.
That’s kind of what I thought too. I am doing about .12mm - .15mm (.005in - .006in) step over… so yeah. It takes quite a while. Just didn’t know if the z doing the hokey pokey was hard on it.
On the SP5 on my finishing parallel passes I crank it to pretty much max speed (150-200 IPM) I would not do that for pocket operations, only parallel. It is taking such little material off it the machine moving are the only forces at play.
