Issue with installing new HDZ for Shapeoko Pro

Received my new HDZ and Spindle Kit for my Shapeoko Pro. Started with the HDZ of course and I was following the instructions steps via the Carbide 3D video on YouTube.

Problem is removing the 4 screws holding the mounting block and stepper motor on the old Z Plus. I have only tried the top two screws since they are easily accessible to start. Anyways these screws were not budging and almost as if they have permanent Loctite on them and no give at all. Both screw heads ended up stripping so now I’m unable remove the mounting block. I’m sure I could still remove the motor off the block via its longer screws holding it to the block but I’m stuck and unable to remove the block.

I need some help here please. It’s definitely stalled me and unable to get anything going with the new HDZ or Spindle Kit. I’m assuming I’m probably somehow gonna need to get a new mounting block and screws somehow. I’m still under the one year warranty as that doesn’t run up till next month. And it’s not like I broke anything for warranty as it sounds like something done during manufacturing or assembly. Could I please get some help here?

Thank you

Sent email right before posting. And I sent a second email just after reading your message to include a photo. Photo doesn’t show much because it’s just screws that won’t budge but that now also have stripped heads from the screws not budging.

Hopefully I can get some help here and I’m sure those with support will greatly help as always. Just sucks to be stuck and so excited to get my new HDZ and Spindle Kit today and now this.

Here’s a pic. I emailed the pic as well. Again it doesn’t show much but there isn’t much to show.

Thanks

Are you able to use a centre punch on the screw heads and punch them around with a hammer?

Yeah I tried this and also tried using a rotary tool to slot a deep line into the head to try using a flat head screwdriver but no go - still no turn or budge. I did end up breaking two ball end Allen hex keys as the ball ends snapped off in the screws. This sucks as one of the hex wrenches was the Shapeoko supplied hex wrench and the other was one of my nice Klein Tools ball end hex wrenches. They definitely have these screws held in tightly with super strong loctite or cement or something but no budge no matter what.

Hopefully they will just send me four new screws and a mounting plate so I can move on. Definitely sucks and was super excited last night to have the new HDZ and Spindle Kit.

I thought that the leadscrew and stepper motor shaft was one solid unit on the Z+. (That could explain the permanent loctite on the mountings crews.)
And that a new stepper motor was needed when upgrading to the HDZ from the Z+.

Edit: I see on the carbide shop that a Z stepper motor should have been included with the HDZ.

There is the motor for the ball screw but then you have the stepper motor on the back for the belt which needs removed to transplant the motor and the mounting block. Honestly I feel the mounting block should have just been included on the HDZ but transplanting the motor is no biggie at all. The mounting block is where I’m having the issue removing.

In video below at 3:59 you can see where I’m at:

But the block is definitely not coming off.

Ah, ok, got it.

Then I think you have to carefully apply some heat :fire:

That might be the option. I’m hoping to just get a replacement mounting block and the four screws. I’ll definitely need four screws for sure. Hopefully I’ll hear from them here shortly. Definitely not as smoothly as I thought it’d be but other than these four screws it’s so far pretty simple upgrade.

Just heard back from the folks at Carbide 3D and they’re sending a new axis bracket/mount and M5 screws :upside_down_face:

So very awesome as always. Love this company!!! If only every company in the world was only a small fraction of awesomeness of what Carbide 3D is the world would be such a better place
