Finally got a chance to see my friends used Shapeoko 3 he purchased recently. I am not familiar with the machine, we did manage to connect to it using Version 3 of Carbide Motion., board has Grbl .9 and currently no limit/homing switches, with small Dewalt Router.
The issue is that I use the Jog function in program to raise Z axis to highest point. When I turn the cnc power off, the plate with the router drops down until it hits mechanical stop. If I hold the router housing while turning power off it will remain in the up position.
Would greatly appreciate any feedback.
At a guess, this is a belt-drive Z-axis — could you post a photo?
There should be a pair of springs:
2.25in to 6.25in Extension Spring
which will keep it from dropping precipitously — are they missing?
Sorry it took so long to get photos of the machine, he lives about 40 miles from me.
Here are the photos you requested, both springs appear to be connected and not broken.
The springs are something of a balancing act — so long as they don’t allow the mechanism to drop so that it snaps of a delicate endmill, they should be fine.
