When I jog 1mm the machine says it’s traveled 0.998 when I check the page for setting zero. this happens in either direction on the X and Y axis, I will test Z. Is the machine losing steps? Thanks
This is not ‘losing steps’. Losing Steps occurs when the controller says “go this far”, and the motor doesn’t, for example because of a blockage or bad wiring.
This just looks like rounding. If you have changed the ‘step per mm’ settings to calibrate the distance moved, you will see thing like this. Remember, since the machine uses stepper motors, the machine has a smallest distance it can possibly move. If 1mm isn’t an exact multiple of the steps, then the machine will get as close as it can. It likely stopped at 0.998 because one more step would be something like 1.003 - still close, but 0.998 is closer to the desired value.
Connect to the machine using CM, then under Settings, hit ‘Show Log’. Then on the MDI tab, send $$
to the machine and check the Log window.
What values do you have for $100, $101 and $102?
If you keep jogging mm by mm, eventually you will see numbers higher than the expected distance. As you keep going though, you should see that the total error is always quite small, and bounces around being slightly more or slightly less than the exact value.
Thank you so much for the information and peace of mind, I really appreciate it. I will check those numbers when I am in the shop tomorrow. I believe you that the machine is fine, your explanation makes sense
