Just destroyed the McFLy bit and sweepy 2.0

Newby mistake. I made a HUGE mistake, yes, my fault. The dust boot wasn’t on as the machine started to run a new program. I had just turned on the vacuum and router and noticed the dust boot was sitting directly under it so I went to lift it into place and the bit caught the dust boot and shattered and flung it, bending the bit shaft in the process. Thankfully I was not hurt. now to order another.

I was cutting a project that has a 1.458 depth. I used a 1.5" cutting depth Melin bit. That bit tends to vibrate because of the long length. So every 10-15 minutes I pause and check to make sure the collet has not loosened. I always hit pause before messing around with the router. That spinning bit has a lot of power as you found out.

Just like you I have forgot to attach the magnetic brush to my shoe. I would not try to just quickly slip it on when the router is running because my fingers are important to me and you just dont know when the router will suddenly start moving. Plus as you found out the expensive mistake of buying a new bit and dust shoe.

Those reading use this as a cautionary tale and be safe not sorry.

exactly the reason I posted it, as a warning so others do not get hurt.

I emailed them about my mishap even though I am unsure what you meant by they can help, unless you are refferring to their warranty. I feel like this is my fault, not a warranty issue, but I love that they have this. The reason I bought from Carbide 3D is because they seemed like such a great company as I researched a CNC router table.

I haven’t done this, but I’ve done this kind of thing… The problem we all face is being over-confident and in a rush sometimes. If you drop your guard, or don’t pay attention for even a second… It’s a trip to the ER… Thanks for sharing.

Glad you were not injured.

I am still waiting for the nerves to grow back in my index finger. AND I have hosted many safety classes. My nine fingered shop teacher would be yelling at me.

We learn from each others trials and tribulations.

Be careful

Looking at your profile, if you purchased from them new I think you still fall in the 30 day oops warranty. Not sure if that is applicable to endmills but some of the other stuff might be covered. Support is very very solid in terms of taking care of the customers. Dare I say the best ive ever seen from any company.

I wasnt even looking for warranty since it was my fault, I had ordered my replacement stuff and paid for it and they came along and refunded my money. This is the best customer service I have ever seen. When I was researching a cnc machine I was very impressed with them, now I see that they are even better than I thought. Thanks Carbide 3D!
