Laser guided Z-axis

I was recently V-carving some lettering into some wonky wood and it hasn’t come out all that well. Does a device exist which attaches to the Z-axis and measures the distance of the stock surface in real time, fine-adjusting the Z-axis movement accordingly?

It seems that it could be used also for avoiding “falling off” the edge of the stock.

Not that I know of.

The closest thing is using an active probe in the Z-axis to probe for Z-axis height, then applying the probing points to the G-Code file — auto-leveling, it’s usually used for PCB manufacture.
