For softer woods, I like to run two finishing passes - one at an angle to remove most of the material, then another with the grain to bring it right to size. In the past, I had to do this manually by lowering the Z between toolpaths.
CC 815 now has “Stock to Leave” for 3D finishing passes, and it worked great! It also allowed me to increase my DOC for the rough cut. Before, I would set the DOC to 1mm, so that the finish pass would have at most 1mm of material to remove. Of course, that increases cutting times! Instead, I can now cut more aggressively, and then use a ‘rough’ finish pass to remove the bulk so the finishing bit has less work.
Thanks Michael,I should have read your description more closely.I have to carve some more collie dogs on the weekend so I will follow your process. Thanks
Pretty much ‘any angle’. It’s mostly to help break up long stringy pieces that can occur when going along the grain. I also thought that the two different step-over values might cause slight, visible changes in the cutting of the final pass if they were parallel.
