Learning about cnc terminology

As I have been troubleshooting my hard limit alarm, I have come across numerous forum topics with cnc terminology that i know nothing about. How did the smart folks on here become so knowledgeable regarding cnc’s? Where can I go to learn the ins and outs of all parts/softwares? I have already looked on the wiki, but that only did so much.

There is a Glossary at:

but please feel free to ask about any terms which you are unfamiliar with.

You can read around the CNC subject at:

There is a huge amount of material on these pages. It is pitched at people who want to know more. After that, you can improve your skill level knowledge via YouTube. One of my favourite YouTube places is run by the CNC machine manufacturer, Haas. Lots of short video clips produced in the way of tips and problem solving for machinists. It is a free resource and really valuable that a CNC machinist spends time to explain things simply. Some of the stuff is Haas specific but most of it is general so you can learn how to make a difference to finishes, feeds and speeds and the terminology will follow.

Finally, just make chips. Use whatever materials you want and make stuff. Learn from the failures and you will improve in short order. It has taken me 4 years to get comfortable with my Shapeoko 3 and I can plan and make pretty much anything I want to now. The challenge now is to get the best finishes and the highest accuracy. You will never reach a point where you can say, “I have arrived” but you will continue to learn and be frustrated in equal measure.

With the other question I asked about my spindle causing alarm 1, I was directed to a topic talking about shielded wiring. If i went this route to help stop false alarms, do I have to rewire every single wire on the machine? Or is there just certain ones that need replacing?

It shouldn’t be necessary to replace wiring on a new machine — check in at support@carbide3d.com and we should be able to work through this difficulty with you.
