Limit Switch Error (x) on S3 XXL

Hi there,

I moved my Shapeoko XXL to another country in a container and when I powered it back in France (via a 110v to 220v transformer) and started the Homing process it consistently gave me a Limit Switch error (X), with a series of errors after that > view photo.

The Limit Switch Error occurs about 5 seconds after the homing cycle begins and I noticed it pops up on my computer screen right after the Z part goes all the way up and touches the limit switch at the top. Wouldn’t that be the Z limit switch at the top of the Z gantry that goes up and down ? Anyway, I checked and tightened all the wheels so that none of them turned loosely as I saw could cause a similar problem but that didn’t change things. What am I missing to check and correct to eliminate this issue? thank you

So if they are proximity switches then open CM and connect but do not initialize. See if when you place a wrench on each limit switch if you get a response. In the Settings and I think debug you will get an indication on the screen as each limit switch is activated with a metal object. If all the proximity switches work then you may need to adjust one of them to trigger. If you have an older SO3 with mechanical switches you can activate each switch and see if any light change on the controller. Machines with mechanical switches are limited by the version of CM you can run.

Be sure to manually move the Shapeoko off the homing position to test the proximity switches. After they test good then power off and manually move the gantry to the homing position and again power up, connect and see if the switches are active. If one is not active then adjust it closer to trigger.

If you have not already done this since it was moved check all the connections to make sure none of them wiggled loose in transport.

Thanks for the help. Looks like my limit switches are mechanical so the wrench trick is not working. I also checked all the connections from the box /hardware to the switches and they don’t seem loose anywhere. I don’t know what to do from there. It really happens right after it touches the top switch located towards the top of the Z gantry.

If you have the mechanical switches you are limited in the version of CM you can use. Not sure what that is but you could find that information here on the forum. The newest versions of CM assume the proximity switches. You could get the proximity switch upgrade which is pretty cheap and use the most current version of CM. Additionally if your machine is old enough to have mechanical switches you may also need to upgrade your firmware. They have an app do do that upgrade. I believe you need to be on 1.f for the proximity switches and newest CM. There is also a version of the controller that is separate from the gbrl firmware. Check that to save yourself some aggravation.

Any version of Carbide Motion is able to use any sort of homing switches.

So I just tried to re-initialize my machine through the New Machine Set Up process and when I arrived at the Homing Switch State it looked like the X Limits remained on. I tried to flicker the switch many times and also checked the connection and the wires from the switch to the controller and didn’t notice anything wrong. The other two switches turn on only when I press the switch (although the Y switch sometimes doesn’t turn on and sometimes it does) and the Z switch turns on every time.
Do these switches go bad ?
When I opened the controller box I noticed a reset button underneath the limit switches, would it possibly correct this problem if I pressed it?
