I recall seeing a YouTube video a while back which I can’t find again, where Kevin Barnett points out some wooden flowers he made as a gift. It’s a very brief mention in the vid.
I’d really like to try making the flowers but can’t find any suitable line art or stl files to use.
Has anyone else done this kind of project?
If Kevin is seeing this… any chance you can share that file if you still have it.
I’m still looking for help with this so if anyone can aim me in the right direction I’d appreciate it. ![]()
Hopefully @KevBarn14 will be able to chime in here.
Google “carved wood flowers” → images and see if you can find it or something similar.
Yeah I tried that but haven’t found anything I like yet…the search continues ![]()
Was it a flower etched into wood, or 3D carved into wood, or a full realistic 3D flower perhaps with each pedal cut & assembled? What processes did he use to cut it? What type of flower?
In lieu of finding the video or Kevin responding, give a complete description & we’ll help you figure out how to make it. ![]()
I recall seeing this recently. I tried to backtrack my recently watched videos for a few minutes but no luck.
Here is my suggestion for your more motivated than I am at this task self:
Go to your you tube and see which videos you’ve watched.
Once you decide a video to research, start it and then select and hold the “video progress line”? if that makes sense and while holding, raise your cursor.
Those combined actions allow you to manually very quickly move through the video and see exactly where Kevin shows you anything at his desk vs when he is working on screenshare.
If you do this on a computer it is extremely easy to see each precise second of every video and I bet you’ll be able to locate the flowers in a few minutes.
Hope that description makes sense.
Also, see attached screenshot with super and amazing professional notations included.
Best,
Devan
Thats for the help but I’ve done that with no luck… I know its out there… just a matter of finding that breif moment in the youtube world ![]()
@Jeffish, I think I may have stumbled across the project you were looking for. Look at the 8:19 mark of the attached video.
You Sir are genius!! Thats exactly the video I was referring to. Thanks so much!
Now comes the fun part… how to create it from a visual…
Do you want the 3D, like these?
Or 2D, like these? (The centers are 3D)
Looks like they are about 3" - 4" dia?
I like the 2d in the bottom pic. I have a few walnut cutoffs that are under 1/2" thick that I think would work well.
I’ll try to find some time this week to se what I can come up with in CC
Well I changed my mind and did a 3D version loosely based on KB’s flowers. I also made another design which has a recessed centre that allows me to install a “plug” that is a different type of wood.
Next up are the stems. I’m going to draw them up in CC and see how that goes. My other option is asking a friend who has a small lathe to make them for me. I’ll share the finished project when it’s done. ![]()
Nice. Look up “dowel jigs” for the stems. I’m sure there’s a better/faster way than 3D machining them. I had thought of buying dowels & bending them. ??
I was thinking the same but I’d like to use some of the walnut cutoffs that I have to make the stems.
There’s some creative design that needs to be done so I can attach the flowers to them… I’m thinking a half round on the end of the stem similar to the flower centre and use a small dowel to connect both pieces together… It will be a week or so before I get them done so I have time to figure things out
The dowel jig would allow you to use your walnut scraps to turn a square strip into a round one.
I’m sure it could be adapted to the machine. I think most of them typically use a table saw or router table. To attach the flowers at an angle you could split & bend the ends of the stems, or just have an angled attachment hole on the back of the flower. Or leave some stock on the end of the stem to carve a curve.
