part is only 2" in diameter
Yes (Well I did it in stainless steel) and I recommend that you use a Tapered End mill if the geometry of your part allows it. Much stronger than a a standard end mill.

Assuming your stock is a larger block, an alternative could be drill bit as a first operation so an end mill only has to refine the profile
