Mahogany Dashboard

I got to work on a very interesting project for a friend. He wanted to replace the dashboard in his 1963 Austin Healey convertible. It originally had a stamped aluminum dashboard that was covered in upholstery. We got all the dimensions and cut this out on my Onefinity CNC.

The biggest challenge with this was all of the gauges were designed to attach to a 1/16th inch piece of aluminum and we used a 3/4 inch piece of mahogany. The most difficult part of the job was the back which had to have stepped areas for all of the mounting hardware for gauges and controls.

We also inlayed the emblem in the center of the dashboard.

The car didn’t have a glove box so that was added as well (still deciding on the type of closure for opening the glove box. The box was from a Polaris UTV.

Overall, a great project to get to work on. I’m a newbie to CNCs and this created a lot of challenges that I had to overcome.

Ha, love it, i’ve been debating about doing the same to build a new dash for my Chris Craft, which i’m not sure if that’s a CC in your photo upside down or something else

Yes, he has two Chris Crafts that he is working on. That’s where his fondness of Mahogany comes from I guess.

very jealous. I HAD a vintage fiat spyder 124 about 20 years ago that had a mahogany dashboard that was cracked. I bought a piece of mahogany to build a new version but neither had the tools or skills at the time. very nice job…

Very cool. Don’t you love it when a job comes together.

Nicely done! I love unique projects that stretch my design side. Only thing better is hunting down a project and winning the project. Talk about a dopamine rush!
