Main power light on, machine will not connect

I recently moved my 5 pro to a new shop. I have checked all the wiring connections, and everything seems to be in order. However, only the red “Main Power” indicator and the ring on the Power Pendant are illuminated, and the machine will not connect.
I had found a long dead thread here that was closed with no apparent resolution.
Has anyone else here encountered this issue recently?
Thank you.

Does the powered on controller make a noise when you connect the USB cable to your powered on computer ?

Are the lights under the gantry lit ?
Confirm the estop button is not depressed

If you can step through everything you’re doing and at what point it should function but isn’t that would be helpful.

When I start my Shapeoko 5.1 with the 110v spindle, here’s what I observe:

  • Turn on the power to the control box/vfd
  • Release the e-stop button
  • There’s a “pop” noise as the lights turn on and the motors engage
  • I hear a slight wining noise probably from a fan in the controller or vfd
  • On my control computer, in Carbide Motion, it gives me the “connect” button
  • Clicking the button I hear some muted noises from the motors as they are engaged by the software
  • The “initialize” button is available and I’m able to start from there

If I have Carbide Motion open and the controller isn’t on or I have the e-stop engaged, or the usb cable has come out, I get a dialog box letting me know it can’t connect to the controller.

What sequence are you observing when you try to turn on and connect to the machine?

Nope. No noises. No responses. Just the two indicators. Red light on the controller box, ring light on the power pendant.

Computer is powered on. Carbide Motion is running. Switch power on the controller and VFD. Verify e-stop isn’t engaged. Attempt to connect to machine via Carbide Motion. No luck.
There are none of the typical clues the machine is on - no noises no gantry lights, the C logo on the front rail isn’t illuminated.
The only response is the red “Main Power” light and the ring around the button on the power pendant.

@OhThatsRad

Did you contact support directly?

No LED’s on the gantry and the “C” green logo on the right front Y axis points to the output from the controller to the physical CNC itself. Without power to the machine, it will not connect based on my experience. S5 Pro 4x4, ER11 spindle.

I would retry the estop. It’s a twist to release.
No light on the gantry has been the estop for me.
I brush by it when cleaning.

Ok, I’m standing in front of my machine to see if i can replicate what you’re seeing.

Let me preface that the sticker on the front of my controller says it’s a revision 5.2 controller, so if yours is different there’s the possibility that nothing i’m experiencing would align with yours.

  • Power on to controller/VFD but e-stop engaged: :x: power pendant light doesn’t come on, so it’s not your e-stop
  • Power to controller/VFD, e-stop disabled, usb disconnected: :x: green “C” logo turns on as well as gantry lights, etc.
  • Spindle connection removed: :x: “C” and other lights turn on
  • Motors connection removed: :x: Gantry doesn’t turn on and I don’t hear the fan noise, but the “C” turns on
  • Switches connection removed: :x: Gantry turns on but “C” is off
  • Both switches and motors removed: :x: Power pendant turns on, gantry and “C” don’t, BUT my laptop can talk to it over USB (i.e. i clicked “connect to cutter” and it was able to do so)

Conclusion: either something with your controller is broken and causing it to not connect to the spindle, switches, and USB cable, or there’s some other kind of issue that i’m not able to replicate

I don’t think it would be one or more specific wires causing the issue because the symptoms you’re describing would encompass 3 different connections.

Even when I unplug almost everything and release the e-stop, I get the red power light and a green “machine on” light. So if you’re not even seeing that, then i suspect there’s something up with the controller itself and you should contact support directly.
