Making patterns traditionally (by hand)

Pretty cool! I used to make these for real. Full scale models for molds & mock-ups. All built by hand, ± 0.003". Then later on CNC. Wildly different process.

For reference since it was split…

By hand ? Ouch. I am way too ADD for that.

For a bit on what was involved in that, please see:

@Tod1d if you still have it, you really should post a photo of your tool cabinet.

No fancy cabinet… Just an old Kennedy 3 piece. Here’s an assortment of tools used…

Nice!

I lucked into a Craftsman-branded Kennedy 26" on eBay a while back, which I use for my machinist-oriented tools (I’d love to find a similar base, or at least a compatibly-finished Craftsman rolling tool chest).

Still struggling to work out which tools go where and in what box (and how to keep track of them) — unfortunately, haven’t been able to sell the finance committee on the idea that a Studley tool cabinet replica would be perfect for the living room…

For folks not familiar w/ that:

There are a surprising number of the Kennedy toolboxes running around Boeing machine shops and labs.

They are occasionally surplused as areas are reduced or eliminated. I keep meaning to try to grab one, but never remember to actually look at the surplus website with any kind of regularity. Maybe someday I will…
