I have been making pendants on my lathe with a Joyner Off Center Jig. So far I have only made a few. I want to make several for Christmas. I think I can make these pendants on my Shapeoko. What do you think?
Here is one I made today. It is relatively simple.
The jig consists of two parts. The back has 10 holes and the front half has 24 holes. You start in the center and round up the blank and then move the jig to some combination to make your design. The design process is quite complicated. Someone made a spreadsheet you can input your design and then visually see what it looks like. If you dont use the spreadsheet it is just a guessing game and there are literially thousands of possible combinations.
So I was thinking I could do all these designs on my Shapeoko. What do you think and have you made any pendants, necklaces, ear rings on your Shapeoko.
Here are a couple more that were just experiments.
Would you mind linking to the jig and the spreadsheet? I’m interested in how they implemented the visualization
Earrings are on the long list of todos, I’ll show them off when I get around to them. They’ll be on a Nomad but I’m sure there will be lessons learned that apply to Shapeoko as well.
The pendants are slightly domed. The edges are rounded. After cutting the lines I went back and rounded the edge more and that cut the lines from going all the way to the edge. It is early days for this I have only made 4 so far.
The jig is sold by Niles Bottle Stoppers. Carl Jacobson owns and runs Niles BS. He as a youtube channel and I have talked with him a few times. Really nice person. Joyner Off-Center Jig Archives - Niles Bottle Stoppers
The spreadsheet can be found at Hunt County Woodturners under the Resourceses.
There are two versions. An 8 hole and a 10 hole version. The original version only had 8 holes in the back plate. After a redesign it now had 10 holes. The front plate always had 24 holes.
If you search there are a few other resources about the Joyner Off Center Jig for design.
My hope is to adapt to make things on my Shapeoko. One thing I would like to do is to carve a heart. On the lathe that is not possible. Maybe this will turn into a hybrid project that some on the Shapeoko and some on the lathe. I am in the early stages. Just need some output by Christmas as gifts.
I think you could make quite similar items batched out with a bearing free radius bit for cncs. you wont get the dome effect but all the patterns and such will be quick and easy
