Making Plaque Test Logo

I am making a plaque for my woodworking club. I had made a segmented vase from the gym floor of the Aikman Gymnasium built in 1925 at Stephen F Austin University. It was tore down in the 70’s and our member and his father salvaged the maple flooring. The flooring sat in his garage until he offered it to club members because he was moving away.

I ran a test of the logo on the plaque because it was quite small and I wanted to make sure it would work before putting it on the plaque.

it was carved with a #102 for the pocket and a 15 Degree vee bit for the vcarving part of advanced vcarving.

Here it is painted.

Here it is after sanding.

I thought it came out pretty good. While securing the 15 degree bit I accidentally got my index finger just grazing the bit. It made a very small cut with a few drops of blood. Not serious but yesterday it was so sensitive. I was surprised how sharp that bit point was.

Here is a simulation of the plaque. The vase will sit on a shelf on the left side of the plaque.

The plaque is 7" x 20". The wood is spalted sycamore about 1.3" thick.

I will put an aluminum french cleat on it to hold it on the wall.

… and it probably wouldn’t have been as bad if you could avoid pulling back quickly! That has gashed my parts at times.

That’s a great looking logo plaque, too. (And no visible blood stains! )

New advertising for a good product. “Zinzer Seal Coat, it even keeps the blood from wicking into the grain.”

Got the machining on the plaque done today. The plaque is spalted sycamore and the shelf is rosewood. The finial on the top of the vase is rosewood as well as the top ring maple and rosewood.

To round off the front of the shelf I made a template out of baltic birch plywood on my SO3. Then used double sided tape to hold the template to the shelf and used a router bit on the router table to round it off after roughing it on the bandsaw.
