Makita advice, which one?

Hi guys,

I have finally found a supplier for the Shapeoko 4 XL and I’ll have it shipped over from Belgium in a few days. The only thing I still have to buy is the Makita. I can use some advice on the Makitas. I saw that there are a few different models, any model you can recommend? For example, the MAKITA RT0700CX2J or 3J model?

Thanks in advance for the advice!

Jaap.

The various models indicate the bundling of accessories for hand-held use.

Since it’s a pain to remove the unit, they don’t matter unless you’re buying a second for hand-held use — buy the least-expensive or most-convenient option.

So a standard Makita without the bits and pieces should be ok?

Thanks Will!

yes, I got the bare unit too. The only catch is about the collets: the European version I got came with a 6mm and 8mm collets, and you will most likely need a 1/4" collet and 1/8" (3.175mm) collet. Make sure you plan to find/get those or you will not be able to use some of your endmills (e.g. the one that comes with the Shapeoko, and all other C3D endmills).

Thanks for the tip! According to the shipping list, I have 2 makita collects coming next to the Carbide 3D bits with number: 201, 202, 101, 102 and 301. I also have the BitZero V2 and the Shapeoko Endmill starter pack. Anything else I need?

This is more than enough to get you started, I suggest you defer other purchases to a later date, once you’re familiar with the machine and the workflow and you know what you need “next”.

Did you get the precision collet set?

(or equivalent)

You want those rather than the ER-11 collets we sell.

Thanks, will get those too. I think I have all I need now to get started, thanks for your advice! Many things to learn now. I started last year with a cheap 4030 from SainSmart. A good little router to start with but eventually, you want a better, bigger, stronger one…

Obligatory shameless plug: you may find the ebook to be an interesting read while you wait for your machine to arrive. It’s from the SO3 times, but 90% of the content still applies to SO4

It’s no shameless plug, it’s an excellent resource that ought to be a link in the confirmation email from the C3D store
