Pretty sure I’m doing something wrong with this male inlay Maple. I can send somebody in my file. Maybe you could tell me what I’m doing wrong. I’m using a 30° V Car and a 3/16 and mill.
Maple can bee tough to cut fine details with. Especially “pointy” shapes. I try and “round” my pointy shapes to 1/16" or 1/32" depending on the shape. I cut my bases 0.2" deep, this allows the end mill to do more of the work. I’ve been thinking of cutting base 0.1" deep so the end mill can cut more details.
Post your file, it will give more info for us to look at. Which V-bit are you using? I like to use these guys for inlays.
i tried some edge grain with pointy shapes, never acceptable results. Either use a design with round edges and less fine pattern -did not try that yet- or exclusively use end grain for inlays, what works very well. The strength perpendicular to the grain is much higher (up to 100-fold depending on the wood) than parallel to the grain.
That turned out nice!!
I dig the walnut/maple contrast, one of my favorites! Nice sharp edges and pointy bits. What speeds/feeds and tooling?
