So I am curious where folks get materials to mill. I am very familiar with wood products, but not so much with plastics or metals.

Your local hobby shop and possibly local hardware store may have a display rack of metal from K&S Precision Metals:
and a hardware store will have lengths of various metal alloys — be sure to get one which will machine well, for aluminum, that would be 6061 here in the States:
Or, find a local metal supplier/scrap dealer — if you can find one which will let you sort through off-cuts you can get stuff at scrap prices.
