Mistakes were made - 1st time juice groove

Hi all,

I’m very new to the CNC game and obviously have much to learn. I made my first end grain cutting board and I attempted to utilize my Shapeoko 5 Pro to carve out a juice groove utilizing this bit Amana Tool Bowl and Tray Plunge Router Bit, Carbide-Tipped, for Woodworking and CNC Routing, 45982, 1/4 Radius x 3/4 Dia x 5/8 x 1/4 Inch Shank - Straight Router Bits - Amazon.com

I coped the settings from a vee bit 60 degree cutter and I tested it using poplar. The test went fine and I thought I was in the clear (here is a youtube short of that test)

When I attempted to this one walnut and partial maple, it failed as soon as it began the 2nd pass. Here are pictures and a quick video prior to the mishap.

I’m guessing my RPM was too fast ? 18000 and my passes were too agressive?

Trying to figure out to prevent this from happening in the future.

Thank you in advance for your input and help.

Jon

Looks like the bit came loose. Was the bit intact when you looked at it after the cut? Meaning did the carbide chip out or come off?

If the bit looks ok then I would say it loosened up during the cut. Did you E-stop the spindle?

Did you try and cut this in one pass? If so that’s allot chip load on a 3/4” bit.
