Mitutoyo or Moore & Wright?

I’m thinking about a few brands. However, the most affordable are: Moore and Wright and
Mitutoyo.

EDIT: removed link

Both specifications are nearly identical such as resolution, repeatability and accuracy. but the prices vary greatly.

Is it possible to go wrong with Moore and Wight? or should I splurge a little?

What are you trying to measure sir

I use Mitutoyu professionally (aerospace), can’t say anything bad about them. Top notch stuff imho. Having said that, I have two sets of Amazon cheapie calipers that I’ve used at home for several years. The feel isn’t the same, but when you’re measuring something like wood 0.001” doesn’t really matter. So the question comes down to are you building to Space Shuttle tolerances? The other thing to keep in mind is professionally I handle those high end tools with kid gloves, they also get sent out for calibration regularly. With the sets I have at home I won’t cry if I drop them on the floor or they get mashed under a load of wood, I’ll just replace them. After saying all of that, I also own some high end tools and love them, so I’ll never tell another tool person to just buy cheap.

Another thought, do you own a surface plate? One that has been professionally leveled? If not I wouldn’t bother with a really high end height gauge, it’s like spending $200 to calibrate a $5 tape measure.

I’m with @DanoInTx

I’ve also worked aerospace and used calibrated Mitutoyo there, and it’s my favorite for professional work. My personal favorite bang-for-the-buck is Fowler. I don’t buy expensive metrology equipment at home. I’ve used calibrated 1-2-3 blocks and gage blocks and they’ve been consistently accurate to their stated specs…within 0.002"

+1 for Mitutoyo, I use an Absolute coolant proof to measure all my parts.
